What is VidNotes?

VidNotes is an AI-powered video transcription and summarization app available for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, and as a web app. It converts any video into a searchable, timestamped transcript and then uses AI to generate summaries, flashcards, action items, and more. You can import videos from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Vimeo, or upload local files from your device or cloud storage.

What languages are supported?

VidNotes supports English and 30+ additional languages including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, and Polish. The transcription engine handles diverse accents and dialects within each language. Mixed-language videos are also supported. The AI features such as summaries and flashcards are generated in the same language as the source transcript, so there is no need to manually select a language.

How accurate is the transcription?

VidNotes uses state-of-the-art speech-to-text models that deliver high accuracy on clear audio recordings. Factors that affect accuracy include background noise levels, speaker clarity, microphone quality, and how many speakers are talking simultaneously. For YouTube videos with existing captions, VidNotes can pull those directly for near-perfect accuracy. For local recordings, the engine adapts to the audio quality and delivers the best results possible given the source material.

How much does VidNotes cost?

VidNotes offers a free tier that lets you try core transcription and TXT export. The monthly plan is $9.99/mo and unlocks unlimited transcriptions, AI summaries, flashcards, action items, AI chat, and all export formats including PDF and Markdown. The yearly plan is $49.99/yr ($4.17/mo), saving you 58%. All paid plans include a free trial period so you can test the full feature set before committing. Pricing is the same across the iOS app and web app, with secure payment processing through Stripe and the App Store.

What's the maximum video length?

VidNotes handles videos of any length, from 30-second clips to multi-hour lecture recordings and meeting archives. Longer videos process in the background with progress updates, so you can continue using the app while transcription completes. There is no hard limit on video duration. Processing time scales roughly linearly with video length, so a two-hour video takes approximately twice as long as a one-hour video.

What video sources are supported?

VidNotes supports YouTube (including Shorts), TikTok, Instagram, and Vimeo through direct link pasting. For local files, you can import from your device camera roll, iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Dropbox. The app handles all common video formats. For YouTube videos with existing captions, transcription is nearly instant. For other sources, the full transcription pipeline processes the audio track.

What devices can I use VidNotes on?

VidNotes is available as a native app on iPhone (iOS 17+), iPad (iPadOS 17+), Mac (macOS 14+), and Apple Vision Pro (visionOS 1+). There is also a web app at app.vidnotes.app that works on any device with a modern browser, including Android phones, Windows PCs, and Linux machines. Your transcripts are stored locally on each device.

Is my data private and secure?

Yes. VidNotes processes your videos securely with encryption in transit. Video files are not stored after transcription completes. All transcript data is stored locally on your device using SwiftData, not on remote servers. You have full control over what gets exported, shared, or deleted. We never sell user data or use your content for training AI models. The app does not require an account for basic usage.

Can I export my transcripts?

Yes. VidNotes supports export to PDF with formatted headings and timestamps, TXT for plain text compatibility, and Markdown for note-taking apps like Obsidian, Notion, and Bear. You can export full transcripts, AI summaries, flashcard decks, or action item lists individually or combined. The iOS share sheet lets you send exports directly to email, Messages, Slack, or save to any cloud storage service.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can try VidNotes in your browser or on the iOS app without creating an account. The free tier is available immediately. When you upgrade to a paid plan, account creation is handled through the App Store or Stripe depending on the platform, with minimal information required.

How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time through your App Store settings on iOS or through the Stripe billing portal for web subscriptions. After cancellation, you retain access to paid features until the end of your current billing period. Your existing transcripts and notes remain accessible after cancellation. There are no cancellation fees or penalties.

What AI features are included?

Paid plans include AI Summaries that extract key points and structured highlights from any transcript, AI Chat that lets you ask questions about your video and get answers with timestamp citations, automatic Flashcard generation for study and review, and Action Item extraction that identifies decisions, owners, and deadlines from meeting recordings. All AI features work across all 30+ supported languages and generate output in the same language as the source transcript.
